MEN ARE FROM MARS- WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS

Customer Reviews:

the most redundant book I have ever read

By Robertson Thomas - February 24, 2007

This book makes presents several valuable points:

--Men believe in the adage that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

A woman, on the other hand, might say that "if it ain't broke, upgrade it."

Consequently, when a woman offers advice or criticism to a man, the man could misunderstand that she considers him inadequate.

--Men like to be considered competent, whereas women like to be cherished.

This difference could result in an misunderstanding.

When a woman asks questions such as "Do you have enough cash?" or "Did you remember your umbrella?" she is treating others as she would like to be treated, but not as a man might like to be treated.

--When men share their problems, they want solutions.

When women share their problems, they want empathy.

This difference results in situations in which a woman shares her problems, the man offers solutions, and the woman becomes angry because the man... read more

Communication Is Key

By Dave_42 "Dave_42" - February 10, 2007

This is a different type book than what I normally read. "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus" by John Gray is an attempt to help couples communicate. The premise is that men and women are so different it is as if they are from different planets. The book is full of examples of behaviors and the motivations behind those behaviors, which Dr. Gray assigns to one sex or the other.

As indicated by the two-star rating I gave this book, I have several problems with it, but it is not totally without use so I want to cover that part as well. Starting with the problems I will begin with the writing style. The Mars/Venus theme gets old very quick, and while he eventually seems to get away from it later in the book, he should have minimized it much more quickly. The analogy is fine, but it doesn't need to be repeated ad nauseam. The problem with being repetitive doesn't end with the theme either, as he feels the need to repeat his points over and over. This makes for a... read more

Overrated Assessment of the Battle Between the Sexes that Relies Too Heavily on Stereotypes

By Stephen B. Whitehead "classicalsteve" - August 18, 2010

Gray's motivation for the book is certainly noble: the idea that men and women need to better understand one another in order to foster healthy relationships. However, Gray's solution in "Men are From Mars and Women are From Venus" is to embellish upon large generalizations about men and women that really border on stereotypes which almost rings of sexism. Not sexism in the sense of putting someone down because they are a member of a particular sex, but in the sense of the idea that "all men do X" and "all women feel Y", as if human beings have ever so neatly fallen into such predictable patterns of behavior. If this were really true, then there shouldn't be any more human conflict because everything is quite identifiable. If there's anything that can be said about the human race, behavior, attitudes and beliefs are decidedly unpredictable. Trying to characterize them as predictable would be as naive as making the sames kinds of generalizations about people from particular religious... read more
