Interesting read....
By ajr - November 1, 2009This book was a very interesting read for anyone thinking about getting pregnant. I really appreciated the information about nutrition, handling stress and a healthy environment and have started to change my way of life already, even though it will probably be another year before we start trying. I gave the book 4 stars instead of five because of the last section that is "just for men." I was very disappointed with this portion of the book and it left a sour feeling for me. While the book gave more science based information for women, it took a turn in talking to men in a "man-to-man" sort of way. The discussion about infidelity turns into this madness of don't cheat on your wife, though wives sometimes cheat on husbands, and how there are sometimes questions about who the father is....and so on. Very informative

It does not discuss HOW to get pregnant - i.e., fertility, timing, ovulation, etc. - but there are plenty of other books that do. Rather, this book covers everything a couple should do BEFORE trying to get pregnant, including starting on an exercise regime, getting to a healthy weight, eating the best possible diet and eliminating environmental toxins. It has lots of practical tips and is written in a very accessible style, but what I particularly liked is that also has proper footnotes to all of Dr. Lu's sources, so you can do your own follow-up research on the technical stuff, if you are so inclined.
Scary and Unnecessary Reading

We decided to get some preconception books to learn some more about how to get ourselves and our home ready to start trying. We are educated people who generally live a healthy lifestyle - mostly organic foods, natural cleaners, taking daily supplements. When we came across Dr. Lu's book we were thrilled since it looked great. When our package from amazon came we tore right into the books and started reading. Much to my dismay Dr. Lu's book, like many reviews here indicate, is SO overwhelming and SO scary that it is not helpful in any way. Most of the information in here one would know already if you are environmentally minded and health conscious at all. Dr. Lu makes it seem as though there is NO way for any normal parents-to-be to make a healthy, beautiful baby unless you move to the middle of the woods somewhere.
