The student tested-and-reviewed way to prep for the family medicine shelf exam and the USMLE Step 2 CK
"A very complete review that will not only prepare you for the family practice shelf but for the Step 2 CK exam as well." -- Joshua Lynch, Medical Student, Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.
"Family Medicine: PreTest is well organized and the content areas discussed . . . are highly relevant to the material and concepts covered on the USMLE Step 2." -- Kevyn To, Medical Student, SUNY Upstate Medical UniversityFamily Medicine: PreTest Self-Assessment & Review is the perfect way to assess your knowledge of family medicine for the USMLE Step 2 CK and shelf exams. You'll find 500 USMLE-style questions and answers that address the clerkship's core competencies along with detailed explanations of both correct and incorrect answers. All questions have been reviewed by students who recently passed the boards and completed their clerkship to ensure they match the style and difficulty level of the exam.
Family Medicine: PreTest Self-Assessment & Review is the closest you can get to seeing the test before you take it. Great for clerkship and the USMLE Step 2 CK! Family Medicine: PreTest asks the right questions so you'll know the right answers. Open it and start learning what's on the test.
This was the only book I needed to get through Family Medicine. I tried reading CaseFiles before this test and, as in Internal Medicine, I didn't retain the information. It's difficult to keep the vast details of an entire case in one's mind weeks after merely reading about it.
If you are the kind of person who does well by looking at sample tests before you take the real thing, PreTest is much better. I swear some of the questions in here came straight off the shelf. Yes, I was still stumped sometimes. But after reading this book literally the two days before (no sleep!), I passed the shelf with room to spare. It takes about 48 hours or more to read the thing if you don't stop. I don't suggest taking such risks, but this is a super-helpful book to go over just before the exam.
this book needs to be taken with a grain of salt.it has a lot of good questions which are test worthy, but unfortunately they seem to be out of date.
For example, colon cancer screening starts at age 50 unless the person has a relative under the age of 60 who had colon cancer, then it starts at age 40 or 10 years earlier than the relative who was diagnosed, whatever is earlier. (question 17 makes a mistake on this). Use medscape or uptodate to check for the latest informaiton; or the aafp website.
so please, if you get a question wrong, please research it to find the latest up-to-date information.
Although I've commented that Pretest is hit or miss, I must say that for FM, pretest was definately a hit. Questions were very comprehensive, and because of that, it was all I needed for my shelf.
