Excellent work
By Mladen Gogala - February 27, 2012This is an excellent book, a must have for any DBA striving to understand and manager RAC. The only thing that is unclear to me is why is called a "handbook". It is a reference work which covers the entire area, from the installation, explanation of the components to the nitty gritty details of the cache fusion, dynamic resource mastering and PI blocks. This is not an easy book to read, it is written very densely and covers a lot of material. I am an experienced DBA, with more than 20 years of experience in the industry and it still took me time to read and digest this book to the satisfactory level. It is complete and it contains everything I always wanted to know about RAC but didn't dare to ask. That should have been the topic of the book. Once again, excellent, excellent book, a must have for any DBA dealing with the complexities of RAC.
Another great book from Gopal!
By Chandra - September 22, 2011Another great book from Gopal! Excellent technical content including useful and valuable troubleshooting tips. As Sandesh Rao mentioned in his review, this book would be a great reference if you are involved in troubleshooting and administrating RAC databases and GI stack. Gopal has done a great job in covering the details and intricacies involved in Cache Fusion/Coherency internals in Chapter 12 titled "A closer look at Cache fusion", which is my favorite chapter and topic. It has great coverage including tracking various events (including handy SQL scripts) associated with cache fusion.
Practical Scenarios and good for learning RAC
By S. Rao - August 24, 2011Being the tech editor for this book , my recommendation is biased , although I'd say its always a pleasure editing K Gopal's books . The content is good , crisp , to the point , and also covers many troubleshooting scenarios as well internals on RAC and Cache Fusion on how it works. There is a refresh in this book for 11gR2 for its stack from the previous book. This is a good reference if you're learning , working with or administering RAC , ASM environments
