An easy yet informative read
By Jonathan - October 8, 2008As far as modern American history texts go, this is one of the easier reads out there without sacrificing perspective. The book reads almost like a novel you've seen the movie adaption of: you already know how the story ends, but in reading the novel you pick up on a lot of the nuances you may have missed when you saw the movie. Most Americans have a basic idea of recent American history, but this book fills in the details and gives good historical context.
I was impressed at the breadth of topics covered in the chapters, which for the most part discuss time periods, like "The Great Depression" or "Reconstruction" (this also helps with flow, as the book progresses more or less chronologically). In the chapter on the Depression, for example, the author devotes a few paragraphs to what movies of the time were about, which some may argue is historically unimportant but to the average reader provide great context.

Kindle Version Limited To One Device
By J. Wallace - March 21, 2011I bought the Kindle version of this book because I was short on time. I was unpleasantly surprised to discover that the book can only be downloaded to one device. This is a huge inconvenience for me, as I usually load a copy at home and another at work.
Used copies of this book are available for less than $2.00, right here on Amazon. I paid nearly $30.00 for the convenience of an electronic copy, which turns out to be restricted to an absurd degree. I won't be purchasing ebooks from this publisher in the future.
Yup, It's a textbook
By Drew Bruckner - April 9, 2013It was a pretty decent textbook, it held my attention and told some stories in an interesting way. Getting this version is a lot cheaper than getting the new one. It also probably contains all of the same materials. History doesn't really change, after all.
