For undergraduate students who have completed a course in object-oriented programming
Programming the World Wide Web 2010 provides a comprehensive introduction to the tools and skills required for both client- and server-side programming, teaching students how to develop platform-independent sites using the most current Web development technology. Essential programming exercises are presented using a manageable progression: students begin with a foundational XHTML Web site and employ new languages and technologies to add features as they are discussed in the course. Readers with previous experience programming with an object-oriented language are guided through concepts relating to client-side and server-side programming, including ASP.NET using C#, JavaScript™, Java™ servlets, Ajax, JSP™, XHTML, XML, PHP, Ruby, and Rails.
This was a textbook for my web development class. Excellent textbook for learning a wide variety of web development technologies. You will not be an expert, but it will get your feet wet for sure.
Had to purchase for a class. As a class textbook, it fails. It is not written so that is is possible to do a pre-test review of the chapter without re-reading the whole chapter. For example, in the JavaScript (chapter 4) it introduces methods. It will mention the more useful methods in the text, then provide a table/chart/box with other methods for the same object. But it fails to include anything about the specific methods introduced in the text. Thus, there is not quick-reference of the methods you need a quick-reference for.
The author will also mention a method "in passing", then later attempt to build on the earlier information. The problem is, you can't find the earlier information easily because it was off-topic and none of the bold heading include it. So, you have to reread everything to find the initial reference.
The book 'assumes' you know C++. There are a lot of items explained as 'just like in C++' or similar language. Since the course using this book did not... read more
First off, some things about me:
I'm pretty good in Java (classes, objects, inheritance, polymorphism, exception handling - learning swing now).
I had to buy this book for a course.
I really don't like this book.
The Review:
The authors try to cover HTML, XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and other web technologies... ALL IN ONE BOOK. This is completely absurd and it shows in the way the material is presented. Several topics are glossed over or simply mentioned in passing (i.e. not covered at all).
You are assumed to have extensive experience with a high-level language like C++ or Java (which is NOT the same thing as JavaScript). The JavaScript section (chapters 4-6) are really bad. I had to use external references on almost every page just to understand what the authors were talking about.
Where are the examples in this book? Snippets of code are useless - I want to see how the whole things works together. MAKE A WEB... read more
