Fluency with Information Technology: Skills, Concepts, and Capabilities (4th Edition) (Pearson Custom Computer Science)

Customer Reviews:

Excellent broad survey of IT topics

By D. A. Clements - January 10, 2011

I've used this book and the earlier edition for the last 8 quarters for a 5-credit course. Over the course of 10 weeks, it would be impossible to go any deeper. I can't imagine having time in the course to go any deeper into any of these topics. We spend 3 hours per week in lecture and 2 hours in the computer lab and this book is just right for that. Its intended audience is people who need to know about IT because of our technological society but who have no plans to work in IT. This book really demystifies that black box. IT is no longer magic and our students pick up lifelong skills, concepts, and capabilities in IT and lose their fear of computers and IT somewhere along the way.

The hardest part of the course for non-programmers is JavaScript. I supplement that part of the book and the course with tutorials at W3 Schools and I've tried various JavaScript pocket guides. This quarter, I'm trying Burdette's JavaScript PocketGuide.

Got the book on time for my class and it was very helpful. Easy to trade back to once I was done with it!

liberal arts analogy applied to the field of computing technology

By G. Forman - December 7, 2012

I wanted my high-school senior daughter, who doesn't want a computer science career (like mine), to go through this book home-school style. She's on chapter 9 so far and it's going well. I think this book provides a good overview of many areas. What a sampler platter! There are so many different ideas that are amenable to the novice once explained. In a way, it's the philosophy of liberal arts education (broad knowledge, not just career knowledge) applied to the field of computing technology; as opposed to mastering some specific software tools like Word/Excel and calling it your technology education. Nice idea. And the technophiles can pursue areas more deeply as it sparks their interest. Of course, she's learned Word/Google docs/email/online courseware/etc. just by use in her other classes. But with this book she's being exposed to various kinds of technology thoughts that she'd never get just by using technology in her life. For an completely non-tech major, it may be a... read more
