Consider the gap between the out-of-context quote from the author in the previous review and that reviewer's own choice of language, e.g., "this book sucks," and you should get a good sense of how valid his review is. That said, this is a challenging, extremely well researched, and very insightful book on why gender inequality persists. This is a difficult topic to research and write about due to its complexity and the often tacit nature of gender segregation. Cecilia Ridgeway offers a solid academic view of this complexity. It takes a bit of time to read then reflect upon what she is offering in her perspective about the stall in women entering the workforce and the continuing small number of women in higher executive positions. It's worth your consideration.
This book sucks. Here's an example:
"The contemporary American home, then, is a fluid nexus of moralized cultural schema of family men and women juxtaposed with the changing material exigencies of the people who join together to form households and raise children."
Is that really a new or controversial statement? No. Does she back it up with facts, figures, examples, or first-person narratives? No. Is it hard to read? Yes.
The word "gender" is used 10 times in the first nine sentences. That's the attention-grabbing introduction to this terrible book that's required reading for my gender studies class.
