Fascinating Study Of Yoruba Culture & Gelede Ceremony

By James I. Cole "grayspur" - January 25, 2013

Softcover, 10" x 7", 327 pages, approx 150 b/w photos, 21 color photos, 2 maps, some line drawings, several poems and songs. Glossary of Yoruba terms, bibliography, index. Author : Babatunde Lawal. Published by University Of Washington Press, 1996.

Not an Yoruba "art" book as such, but more an interesting review of the Gelede Ceremony ("Spectacle") of the Yoruba people which just happens to feature some wonderful masks and headdresses. There are indeed some nice photos of Gelede art, but most of the pictures are field photos of the Yoruba people, nicely demonstrating aspects of their culture, along with Gelede preparation and ceremony. "Gelede" are popular community festivals of masquerade, song and dance perfomed at certain times of the year by the Yoruba people of Southwestern Nigeria and the Republic of Benin. The text by a Yoruba native is excellent and easily readable, without the insufferable pretension and self-importance which often accompanies such books.
