This is a great book introducing 21 modalities in massage and bodywork.
The editor Elaine Stillerman does a wonderful job in compiling this book. Each chapter is written in a consistent style by experts in their field. Each chapter has an intro, history, definition, techniques, indications & contraindications, certification/training, case history, resources and questions at the end. The "boxes" provide useful information. In some chapters, the authors provide their personal 'In My Experience'.
Despite some snags, overall this is a great introductory book for the most commonly used modalities in massage. Beginners or even experienced bodyworkers can get a good intro to the modality they are interested in in, and they can consult the resources if want to pursue further.
I bought this book for one of my classes. My teacher said that she had reviewed and it was supposed to be super spectacular. The good: it covers a large range of modalities, it has lots of nice pictures and each section is written by an "expert" in the field. The bad: it's like somebody gave the authors a thesaurus and told them to use as many $10 words as possible. The result? A book that is disjointed, incredibly hard to read through and understand, often irrelevant, and typically rambles on for pages about the history of a particular modality without actually giving the reader anything helpful to work off of. There are much better books out there.
