An excellent review on formal written English
By M. Wang - July 4, 2010I learned English as a third language and did not get to use it professionally until well into my 20s. There were gaps and errors in my knowledge of formal English, and they had been a hindrance throughout my career.
Looking back, I regret deeply for not studying a reference guide such as this one earlier. It covers the basic grammatical rules, lists the common spelling errors and even discusses the usage of all the important words and phrases. What benefits me the most, nonetheless, is the section on punctuation. I had never quite mastered the usage of colons and semicolons, but now I feel much more comfortable using them.
I purchased the ebook version for my Nook. The formatting looks fine on the small screen. The only constant annoyance is the page number, which corresponds to the paperback version instead of the electronic one. Overall, this is a great reference for anyone who had not gone through rigorous training on professional English writing.
