He dryly observes, "The satisfactory experience that the relics of saints were more valuable than gold or previous stones stimulated the clergy to multiply the treasures of the church. Without much regard for truth or probability, they invented names for skeletons, and actions for names. The fame of the apostles, and of the holy men who had imitated their virtues, was darkened by religious fiction." (Pg. 66)

With volumne II picking up exactly where Volume I ended, it is exactly what I would have expected. Gibbons' style continues unabated. While it is slow reading, with so much information to absorb (and I find myself having to go back and clarify the specific argument between Arianism and Orthodoxy...) it clarifies so much of what I generally knew about the decline of Rome. I see now that this is the source for so very much that appears in other texts.
I absolutely love his style, and feel that I am back in the 18th and early 19th century...perhaps sitting in his garrett, or visiting in Lake Geneva. He is wonderful!
