It’s the last day of the school year, so it must be time for Wiglaf and all his friends at Dragon Slayers’ Academy to go home and enjoy the lazy hazy days of a medieval summer. Ummm, not quite. Not when Mordred the gold-hungry headmaster realizes there’s money to be made running a camp. This double-sized summer super special packs in twice the fun for fans of DSA, and there’s a full-color 8-page insert that pulls out and includes a ghost story, jokes, and more. The Horn Book calls DSA "a hilarious and deservedly popular magic-propelled series set in the Middle Ages.
I liked the first few books in this series and thought I'd take a look at this Volume 17 to see if the stories were staying fresh and the characters were as engaging as I'd remembered.
Well, the good news is that these volumes are still as fun, funny, imaginative, and good-natured as the first. Wiglaf remains a level-headed, cheerful and resourceful hero. The Academy faculty are as odd as ever. And the friends are still loyal and reliable. The energy level is high and the silliness, (many knock knock jokes), is still fresh and appealing.
A little adventure, a little mystery, a little magic, some derring-do, and a lot of goofiness, with very positive models for boys and girls. What an appealing and rewarding series for young readers.
My son (9yrs old) loves this series... This book in particular is about twice the size of the others, which is great since my son needs to get into longer chapter books now... read more
My 6 year old really likes these books. This one was great to read in the car on vacation. My 10 year old also liked it.
