I am a psychologist that evaluates children for learning issues and have purchased many books within this field. This one stands out because it a nice mix of the theory and background of WM functions, but is also VERY hands on and practical. It provides clear definitions of working memory subdomains, as well as which subtests to administer using common cognitive measures (i.e. WISC-IV, DAS-II, etc.), as well as Memory batteries (i.e. WRAML-2, CMS, etc.). At the back of the book are also worksheets and charts clearly outlining what tests to use for each WM subdomain. There is also a nice chart which outlines which brain areas are responsible for each type of working memory subdomain. Lastly, there are also recommended interventions to improve learning. I find that the quality and usefullness of a book is measured in how often you go to it as a reference. And, with this book I find that I use it a lot (especially compared to some other books I have purchased on these types of... read more
This is an excellent resource that I plan to use in my own assessments and development of interventions for students...not only does it demonstrate how working memory underlies essentially all learning, it gives you all the tools you need to assess this construct and develop research-based interventions. It's definitely worth the time and effort to read it!
I'm a high school language teacher, and I read Working Memory and Academic Learning for a research project that I'm doing on students with working memory problems. Even for someone who has no background in psychology, it is very well written, with clear language and plenty of charts and references to back it all up. One of the chapters is a history of what we understand memory to be, with a helpful explanation of its relationship to long term and short term memory. I do wish there were more in-depth real world examples to explore how individuals respond to WM training. Overall, this is a great introductory text to the study of memory.
