Focusing on writing for publication, The Handbook of Scholarly Writing and Publishing discusses the components of a manuscript, types of manuscripts, and the submission process. It shows how to craft scholarly papers and other writing suitable for submission to academic journals. The handbook covers how to develop writing skills by offering guidance on becoming an excellent manuscript reviewer and outlining what makes a good review, and includes advice on follow-through with editors, rejection, and rewrites and re-submittals.
As a doctoral student in public policy with a background in molecular biology, I was pleased to discover that Rocco and Hatcher's work is highly applicable to many scholarly disciplines. Although I am an "emerging scholar" in public policy, I have coauthored several papers in scientific journals and found that Chapters 18 and 20, "Addressing Feedback from Reviewers and Editors" and "Working with Coauthors," were extremely insightful. I only wish that this book was available years ago. Additionally, unlike several other books that I have recently read on scholarly writing, this book provides clear and relevant examples of how to engage the literature, organize your research, and write salient literature reviews. Overall, although the scope of this book is broad both in terms of applicability and topics, it still somehow achieves sufficient depth across the board. I will continue to learn from it as I grow as a scholar (Chapter 3 was one of my favorites: "Learning to Write: Wisdom... read more
I highly suggest this book to any graduate student or new scholar seeking help in the process of starting, finishing, or improving a manuscript of any kind. The book offers detailed suggestions and guides for a number of publication types (i.e. book review, conceptual paper, research from the dissertation, etc.) and writing up different research methods (qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods, etc.). The book is especially helpful for those in fields related to education, adult education, or human resource development, though the title might suggest to some that it is intended to be helpful regardless of discipline. I hope to see a future edition of the book expanded to include scholars and contributions from other fields, but overall, this book is a good start to an important conversation: improving writing among scholars and students, and alleviating some of the stress and mystery that surround the process.
This book is completely accessible for any emerging scholar in any discipline and includes some useful tips for experienced scholars. I wish I had this book at the start of my graduate program.
