Decent for younger students
By K. Blackburn "KJG" - February 18, 2011Although this book says is is appropriate for grades 6-12, I think it would be best suited for middle school. I think my high school students would roll their eyes at me in exasperation if I suggested they do most of the activities in this book. However, I really do think it would be pretty good for middle school.
extremely helpful
By C. Bott - April 19, 2012I'm a fan of Mary-Ellen Ledbetter, and this book did not disappoint me. There are some wonderful, short exercises to introduce, review, or reinforce literary terms and writing strategies, including many for the standardized tests. All of the examples were written by Ledbetter herself, rather than her students, and my students found them entertaining. All of the "smiley face tricks" are featured, which is a great way to introduce them one at a time at the start of the year. The only negative I can say is that the size of the book is smaller than a standardized sized piece of paper, which made for minor issues when making master copies of the reproducibles...although this is probably more of a criticism of my school's copy machine than the book.
