Captain Underpants Wipes Out the Competition
By James Tepper ""Are we there yet"" - November 9, 2008My son, Jacob (age 7.5) has just finished reading Vol. 8, "Captain Underpants and the Preposterous Plight of the Purple Potty People" to me out loud. It is the latest and last (so far) in the Captain Underpants series. The author and illustrator, Dav Pilkey, is an awesome talent. All the C.U. books contain sci-fi adventure built for children and are filled with super power juice, hypno-rings, time travel, alternate universes, evil teachers and principals, grandparents, robots and so on. They are also filled with humor (most of it, despite the titles, in exceedingly good taste) that appeals to the kids as well as to their parents (mean teacher Miss Anthrope), albeit perhaps at different levels. I laughed out loud consistently as my son read these to me. The dialog is snappy and cute, as are the illustrations and the books within books (comics drawn by the main characters, Harold and George complete with little kid illustrations and misspellings) that punctuate all the entries in... read more
Captain Underpants Collection was a fun book to read!!!!!!

Just good fun, as well some complex vocabulary that presents with teaching opportunities. What a great collection. I do recommend getting the first 4 volumes though.
