Nickel on the Grass: Reflections of a U.S. Air Force Pilot is a worthy read that confirms the bravery of our fine Air Force pilots in both peacetime and war. These stories are interesting, inspiring, thoughtful, heartwarming, and funny. I've had the extreme honor and pleasure of meeting the author, and this book is a fine tribute to him as well as the honorable and brave men he served with defending our nation. It's obvious that this book is more about the men who fly rather than just about their aircraft. I wanted to read the book in one session, but forced myself to read a story a day until I was finished. These are stories to be savored and enjoyed. Col. Handley is a true gentleman warrior and his book should be enjoyed by all who admire heroes.
Well told vignettes of the life and times of a USAF pilot from the early 60's to 80's. Recommended.
I'm a 69 year old airplane fan. Have been all my life and still rush outside with binoculars when I hear one passing overhead, especially when I detect the distinctive rumble of a big radial. Well, when I saw this book on Amazon I was captivated by its title. Nickel On The Grass. How in the world does the writer tie a title like this to his story. This is a great story written by a fellow Texan whose Texas sense of humor shows in many of his tales. I probably should hesitate to reveal this for fear of being thought of as being somewhat of a airplane lunatic but I have now read over 50 fighter pilot books and this one is a keeper. You'll enjoy it. And the title meaning? Get the book and find out ! !
