Highly Recommended by a CS Educator!

I have been teaching XNA for four years and have bought multiple XNA books. This book excels in teaching novice programmers the basics of programming within the context of creating video games. Teaching beginning programming in the context of video games is a national trend and exists at some of the top computer science programs in the country (Carnegie Mellon, UC Berkeley, GIT, etc.)
I would suggest this book for students who have:
- never programmed before
- never programmed in an object-oriented language
- are coming from an Intro to Java course and want to learn game programming
This book is not for the expert programmer who just wants to apply their craft to creating video games. As such, this is not for the seasoned developer and was not meant for them in the first place.

Its ok, True Begginners only!
By IanStansbury - May 5, 2011It's not that its a bad book, its pretty good at introducing XNA to someone who's never really done any kind of programming. Of course the flaw with this thinking is that is you've never done any programming at all you probably shouldn't start off with a video game. My main problem is not just that its overly simplified but that its kind of a waste of money. You would be much better off going to the APP hub(formally XNA Community Home) or one of the multitude of XNA related web sites and working through some tutorials. Or even better working through some simple C# programs first(which is what I highly recomend). TBH, you can watch some YouTube videos and cover 1/2 to 3/4 of this book in a couple of hours. Save you money and get a more advanced book.
This book is perfect for beginners!

I started my first real programming with a previous version of this book and it has worked out wonderfully for me. If you love video games then learn about programming as it relates to video games and pick up the boring stuff later, don't let one bad review keep you down. This book is great!
