Dirty Joke Of The Day
This is a wonderful book. The author has conducted comprehensive research which has resulted in excellent attention to historical detail which brings out how seemingly minor occurrences can have profound impact on the course of battle. The personal observations of men who were there are particularly compelling and provide a rich, powerful picture of the personal side of the conflict.
This book narrates the stories of the Astoria and Chicago in vivid detail. The author clearly cares deeply for the main naval narrative, as well as the stories of the individual sailors he recounts. Though there is a great deal of naval jargon and detail in the book, it's written in a way that anyone can understand and appreciate. The individual stories of survivors make the story come alive for the reader. I would enthusiastically recommend this book for anyone interested in the history of the American Navy or the Naval battles of WWII in the Pacific. Enjoy!
John has written an accurate accounting of the loss of the Astoria and the Chicago at the battle of Guadalcanal in the Pacific. I grew up hearing some of these stories from my late father, a survivor from the Astoria, who was interviewed by John for this book. I highly recommend John's book for other Baby Boomers interested in military history with an emphasis on World War II and battles in the Pacific with personal interviews with survivors of these horrific battles. This is a wonderful book that once started is hard to put down. Sons of our Navy heroes from World War II would normally read books of this type. As a daughter of a survivor I recommend John's book for other women to read to learn about what our World War II heroes experienced at sea.
