Engaging as well as informative, Tunes traces the rise of rock and roll through the format of comics. Capitalizing on the immense popularity of the graphic novel, Vincent Brunner has assembled illustrators and cartoonists to visually depict the history of rock music through comics. This unique approach will not only appeal to those who grew up with the bands, but also to an entirely new generation of budding fans. Full of colorful personalities from larger-than-life divas to modest men who made it big, the story of rock is compelling and diverse. From Elvis and Little Richard to the British Invasion in the 1960s and onward through the eras of punk, heavy metal, new wave, and grunge, this series of black-and-white graphic depictions ranges from hilariously personal to absolutely wild. Each strip is accompanied by humorous yet informative text recounting the early struggles, successes, and challenges of each band. Also included is a selective discography for each band or artist, highlighting their biggest hits or most memorable songs.

The graphics were good but the information was sketchy. It should have been called " Some Obvious Highlights from the History of Rock and Roll - In Pictures". Many musicians and groups of equal stature and importance to those depicted were left out. Very superficial view of the "history".

This book should have been called: "Short strips that has somewhat something to do with Rock and Roll". I was expecting something like a year by year history of the medium that interconnected, but it's all very short strips about artists. Let's just say had I seen this book in a store I would have had the chance to leaf through it and it would have stayed at the store.

This is a fun book that will get readers up to speed on the history of rock and roll through comics. Different creators took on writing and illustrating the history of great artists from Janis Joplin, David Bowie to recent artists. The book was originally published in French and has been completely translated into English. But that shouldn't stop you from buying it. If you're in a history of rock and roll course for teens this would actually be an interesting textbook. Or, if you want to know more about rock than just Lady GaGa or Justin Timberlake, check this book out to learn about their roots. You might find out about a lot of artists you will then want to download on iTunes. Those who have been through the history of rock will probably enjoy re-reading the stories in comic form.
