\nof a combination of Panax ginseng, vitamins and minerals
\nin reducing fatigue-induced deficits to cognitive function
\nand mood. A shift-work model was developed in which
\nnurses were repeatedly evaluated on a variety of cognitive
\ntests and questionnaires immediately prior to undertaking
\na three-night shift and then again immediately afterwards.
\nOn the day before the shift thirty nurses performed a selec-
\ntion of tests from the Cognitive Drug Research (CDR) com-
\nputerised assessment system, as well as Bond-Lader mood
\nand alertness scales at 0800, 1200, 1400 and 1600 hours.
\nThey also completed the Chalder fatigue scale once during
\nthis time. On the day immediately following the three-night
\nshift, they returned directly to the laboratory and under-
\nwent an identical schedule of testing. The nurses were then
\nassigned randomly to receive either the combination or
\nplacebo for the next twelve weeks in a double-blind, paral-
\nlel group design. The shift model was then repeated six and
\ntwelve weeks later using exactly the same schedule of assess-
\nments. To confirm that the shift model was effective in
\nimpairing cognitive function and inducing fatigue, the
\ndata for the shift model run prior to randomisation were
\ninitially evaluated. The three-day shift resulted in signifi-
\ncant declines in both speed and accuracy of attention, and
\nthe ability to store and retrieve information from memory.
\nDeficits to self-rated calmness and contentment were also
\nidentified. In addition, increased levels of fatigue were seen
\non the Chalder fatigue scale. This shift-induced deficit was
\nthen used as the major study outcome. The pre-study deficit
\nwas used as a baseline, and the deficits measured at weeks
\n6 and 12 were adjusted to form \'change from baseline shift
\ndeficits\'. These adjusted scores were then contrasted
\nbetween the two groups at six and twelve weeks. On the
\nperformance assessments, it was found that the combina-
\ntion reduced the deficits resulting from the three-day shift
\non the Quality of Memory, these effects being significant at
\nthe first three time assessments at week 12. The combina-
\ntion also significantly reduced the self-reported decline in calmness at the end of the measurement session at weeks 6
\nand 12. Further, the combination helped to reduce the
\nincrease in self-reported fatigue as assessed by the Chalder
\nfatigue scale. The results suggest that a combination of
\nGinseng, vitamins and minerals is useful in counteracting
\nnot only self-reported increases in fatigue and decreases in
\ncalmness resulting from shift-work but also deficits on
\nobjective tests of the ability to store and retrieve informa-
