With over 40 million books sold, bestselling author Josh McDowell is no stranger to creatively presenting biblical truth. Now, partnering with fellow apologist Dave Sterrett, Josh introduces a new series targeted at the intersection of story and truth.
The Coffee House Chronicles are short, easily devoured novellas aimed at answering prevalent spiritual questions. Each book in the series tackles a long-contested question of the faith, and then answer these questions with truth through relationships and dialogue in each story.
In Is the Bible True, Really?: A Dialogue on Skepticism, Evidence, and Truth, we meet Nick, a college freshman at a state school in Texas. Nick has his spiritual world turned upside-down with what he hears in an introduction to religion class. His questions turn into conversations as he dialogues with professors, friends, and family about the authenticity and authority of the Bible.
The other two books in the series: Who is Jesus, Really? and Did the Resurrection Happen, Really? continue the unfolding story at the college campus and the coffee house down the road.
Josh McDowell and Dave Strerrett hit the ball out of the park in their book, "Is the Bible True... Really?" The book is part of their Coffee House Chronicles which is a series that seeks to foster a dialogue on skepticism, evidence, and truth.
I loved the fact that this book deals with the subject matter by way of introducing us to the typical struggles of a college student (Nick) with his faith. This made it EASY to read!
The book was relatively short (You can get through it in a single evening) and yet it dealt with some pretty important questions:
Did Christianity borrow from pagan mythology?
When was the Bible "put together"?
When was the New Testament Written?
Is the Bible Inerrant?
Did the Disciples make it up?
What about the "mistakes" in the Bible?
How is the Bible different from other truth claims (Joseph Smith, Muhammad, etc.)?
What about the other Gospels (the Gnostic Gospels)... read more
After reading this book myself I have given it several others who have told me that it opened their eyes to all the evidence supporting the reliability of the Bible. While written as a fictional story, this book is well-researched and includes many citations with pages of endnotes referencing research and the evidence referenced within the story.
In Is the Bible True . . . Really?: A Dialogue on Skepticism, Evidence, and Truth (The Coffee House Chronicles) McDowell and Dave Sterrett merge much of McDowell's earlier writings and research from books like the excellent but massive The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict Fully Updated To Answer The Questions Challenging Christians Today with a very realistic story about a college student whose faith is challenged and then begins to erode at a university.
This short, fictional... read more
I originally offered to review "Is the Bible True...Really," because another one of Dave's books, "Why Trust Jesus", had been of great value to me as I ministered to my dying, agnostic grandfather and I wanted to return the favor.
To be honest, I wasn't looking that forward to it because I had attended Dallas Seminary for 5 years and I had read enough theology books, thank you very much! What I found in the pages of this book, as well as the two companion books, "Who is Jesus...Really?" and "Did the Resurrection Happen...Really?" stunned me quite frankly. I couldn't believe that somebody had put together an easy to read, engaging, thoughtful, page turning book on theology. But I should have expected it from Josh McDowell, who has a flair for drilling down to absolute truth while at the same time wooing non-Christians in with real life dialogue. But Josh freely admits it was Sterrett's idea to make the story even more believable by revolving it around real-life characters... read more
