This is the first Cindy Neuschwander book we [my daughter and I] have read but it certainly won't be our last. "Pastry School in Paris:An Adventure in Capacity" introduces children ages 4-8 to the concept of capacity. Matt and Bibi Zills, a pair of twins, are off to Paris with their parents and dog Riley - and end up taking lessons at a famous pastry academy under the tutelage of Chef Celine. Max and Bibi, who are pretty confident little cooks, find themselves challenged by the confusing measurement system of liquids, and their cooking adventures turn into misadventures. Fortunately, all is well in the end.
The illustrations are vivid and in beautiful color, and this is a great introduction to math [and there are many other math-themed books by the same author]for young readers, and a beautiful picture book for budding cooks!
We need more math-themed books like Cindy Neuschwander's latest, Pastry School in Paris, An Adventure in Capacity, which encourages children to head to the kitchen to cook and create. It's delightful to have both boys and girls creating unique recipes in this delightful story while they learn the concept of capacity. Added touches make this book a winner . . . the setting in Paris, Riley, the dog, and Bryan Langdo's inviting images. As Julia Child would say, "Bon Appetit!"
The Zills family is off to Paris to take a class at the International Pastry Academy, where the kids measure liquids to make lollipops and learn about liquid measurements. When an inspector pays a visit, it's up to the twins and their new knowledge to save the day in this outstanding story.
