Grant reveals the ways in which international, transnational, and local forces are operating on the urban landscape of Accra, from elite gated communities to the poorest slums. Through interviews and extensive field work, he examines how foreign companies, returned expatriates, and native Ghanaians foster globalization on multiple levels. Globalizing City offers an excellent case study of the complex social and economic dynamics that have transformed Accra, providing an essential guide for studying globalizing cities in general.
Such great material in this book and an interesting angle, however it is let down by poor writing style and editorial errors which sometimes make reading it a chore.
If you are interested in globalization and urbanization in the developing world, Richard Grant's book is a very informative read. He integrates extended fieldwork with NGOs and communities in Accra and theoretical perspectives on globalization in a fresh way to explain about globalization from above, from below, and from in-between. Of relevance is that there has apparently (from what I've heard through word of mouth) been quite a bit of demand for Grant's book in Accra as people attempt to gain a holistic picture of the situation and the possibilities there, and to integrate the various developmental goings-on in the city.
