\nand contrast, commonly found in psychophysical judgment tasks, may be present in judgments of abstract magnitudes.
\nA time series approach for analyzing single-subject data is developed and applied to expert prognostic judgments of
\nrisk for heart disease with an emphasis on detecting possible sequential context effects. The results demonstrate that
\nsequential context effects do exist in such expert prognostic judgments. Contrast and assimilation were produced by cue
\nseries; the latter occurring more frequently. Experts also showed assimilation of prior responses that was independent
\nof the cue series input. Time series analysis also revealed that abrupt or large trial-by-trial changes in the value of cues
\nthat receive the most attention in prognostic judgment tasks can disrupt the accuracy of these judgments. These findings
\nsuggest that a time series approach is a useful alternative to ordinary least squares regression, providing additional

\nbeta. Several researchers have empirically investigated the relationship between the
\ndebt/equity ratio (D/E) and beta implied by such leverage adjustments. Typically, this has
\ninvolved cross-sectional analysis of a sample of US firms in selected industry classifications.
\nThe major contribution of the current study is to extend this evidence by investigating the
\nrelationship between financial leverage and beta using a time-series approach. This has
\nseveral advantages over the cross-sectional approach. Our results reveal that while the
\nestimated unlevered beta produced by the time series approach is quite close to the
\ntheoretically implied unlevered beta, the mean difference between the two measures across
\nour sample of 348 US stocks is highly significant. Interestingly, the implied value is
\ninvariably larger than its time series estimated counterpart, with a sample average difference
\nof between five and ten percent. The analysis also reveals that 30 to 40 percent of our full
\nsample rejects a theoretical D/E restriction on the time series model. Moreover, the results
\nsuggest that the restriction is much more likely to be rejected for stocks with high debt/equity
\nratios, which in general have low unlevered betas. Further, there is a considerable cross
\nsectional variation in the proportion of these rejections across industry groupings.
\nAccordingly, these results suggest that due care needs to be applied when taking the
