Too much information and not enough relevance is a problem that pervades almost all business communication. So what's the answer? More relevance and a lot less jelly.
The Jelly Effect teaches you simple, memorable and costless ways to win more attention and more business. Imagine how effective you'd be if you communicated only what was relevant 100 percent of the time. You would be better at talking to others, presenting, networking and selling. You would excel in interviews, meetings and pay-rise discussions. The benefits would be endless.
The Jelly Effect will show you how to get the best out of any situation, whether you're speaking to an individual or a group, formally or informally, inside or outside your organisation. By the time you close the final page of this book, you will be armed with practical, proven techniques that will help you be more effective in all your business dealings.
"Andy Bounds taught me more about effective presenting than a lady who’d previously taught two US presidents."
–Drayton Bird, chairman of Drayton Bird Partnership and world leading authority on direct marketing
Shortly into the book (within the first 3 chapters), the author offers advice on how to answer the question "What do you do?"
I'd never really thought too hard about that before. In the past I'd answer that question with varying responses like:
"I teach at the Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas."
or
"I teach in the Department of Joint, Interagency and Multinational Operations."
The usual reaction was glassy eyes or disinterest - especially to those that had no idea what any of that meant. The author suggested answering not "what do you do?" but "what do you produce, or accomplish?" At that point in the book, telling the reader to stop and write out the answer to the question.
So I did that and, interestingly enough, it worked very well.
My new (draft) answer to that question is:
"I educate military officers to improve their critical thinking skills and to become better staff... read more
The Jelly effect is a Bound's apt description of what most presentations reduce the recipient to, jelly! What a dynamite combination of talents, a communicator/presenter who is also a clear writer. This is a must buy for your summer reading. Easy to read, brilliantly laid out and above all full of stuff that works! My top takeaway, stop telling your prospects about what you will do for them, tell them how their company will be like AFTER you help them. Paint the picture of what others were able to do AFTER working with you. Brilliant and succinct, this is one of the most useful sales and marketing books you can get today. He covers networking, sales, referrals, and presentations and wastes no words. A library keeper.
I don't read a lot of books, but this one made me change my mind. Very good advices, with simple words, explanations, and simple techniques. I already feel good when using them (still reading the book, it's been 1 week since I started). I am certain the increase in sales will come. I like the way author works with the reader and wants you to take actions (write something, use it later) while you are reading the book.
