A Decade of Reform

The findings contained in this book have already influenced policy- and decision-making in China. In 1995, at the request of the Chinese government, the International Development Research Centre of Canada (IDRC) sent a team of experts to assess the reforms made to China's S & T sector since 1985. A Decade of Reform, the first-ever external assessment of Chinese reform programs, presents the findings of this groundbreaking mission. The book focuses on five themes -- basic research, the high-technology sector, traditional state-owned enterprises, agricultural research and rural development, and environmental social development -- and presents a description of China's S & T institutions, including a history of its reforms.
