An unusual collection

Siegfried Kra's book is a collection of very different stories, all having in common that they are very well written. The short stories, with which the books starts out, are the stories of a doctor who shares some of the more interesting things he has seen during his career, some funny, some curious. When I had finished reading those, I did not expect to learn about Siefried Kra's personal history of being the son of Jewish immigrants that fled Germany. However, the three novellas at the end of the book are the stories of the young Kra coming to the U.S. still wearing his Lederhosen (to which he seems, unfortunately I must say, to have developed an ambivalent relationship by coming to the U.S.) and studying/struggling to be a doctor. I heartily recommend this book: No science background or even interest is required to enjoy this book.
