By R. Caruso "ESL Volunteer Instructor" - December 13, 2009My teaching assistant and I used this book as the required text for an ESL second-level beginner class directed toward Latino adults. The book was very appropriate for our needs, and the students generally enjoyed using it. They especially liked their Spanish version which included instructions in Spanish but described exercises in English. The lessons were brief and to the point. The sketches helped clarify the text. The exercises were very good, and we especially liked those that asked students to identify the correct sentence from sentence pairs containing one correct and one incorrect answer. The chapter summaries were great for review as well. The only things which we think might enhance future editions of the book are to include some dialogue practice in each chapter and to add a unit on basic commands used in English.
The perfect book for beginning ESL students who speak Spanish.

My students like this book so much that some of them do the exercises at home on their own.
In class, I ask for a volunteer 'teacher' who reads the explanations in Spanish. We go over
the exercises and expand upon them with conversation practice about their own life situations.
It's a great text. I recommend it highly.
Clear, Concise, Accessible
By Gabriel ESL - February 15, 2011After getting in touch with Ms. Weal and taking a look at the materials, I was immediately impressed by the philosophy behind the books and their overall layout and design. It wasn't until this last winter that I started to implement them into an intensive family literacy program that my organization offers.
I found the materials to be:
Clear and simple, excellent for learners with limited literacy skills in Spanish (native language)
Systematic and well-paced, with plenty of repetition and written exercises that reinforce at a pace that seems just right
Overall, I really enjoyed the ability to assign chapters and work for the home because the instructions/explanations are clear enough that they don't require much guidance from an instructor. I can only offer class twice a week and I find that having this material gives me the peace of mind that my students won't go so many days without having practiced their English.
