Nina Garcia's Look Book: What to Wear for Every Occasion
“We must all listen to Nina Garcia. Sharp and genuine, her advice can make or break an outfit." —Tim Gunn, Fashion Consultant and Mentor of Project Runway
Believe me—there’s pressure when you’re deciding what to wear to a meeting with an iconic fashion designer or a member of the press. It can be terrifying. But instead of panicking, I stop, take a deep breath, and remember that I speak “fashion.” And by the time you have read this book, you’ll be able to speak the language of fashion too, at all the key moments of your life. —from Nina Garcia’s Look Book
Every woman, at one time or another, has contemplated an all-important job interview, first date, formal party, or important presentation and wailed to herself and to her closest girlfriends, “What should I wear” In Nina Garcia’s Look Book, style guru Nina Garcia solves this universal quandary with an inspired and unbeatable combination of fashion knowledge and common sense. She shows us the pieces, the accessories, and the strategies to create the looks that will take us from the first day on a job through the day we ask for a raise and beyond, from the first time we meet our boyfriend’s parents (or his children) through the day we see our own children walk down the aisle. With Nina by your side, you can’t go wrong. You’ll have all the tips you will need to navigate every day looking your best. True style is not about having a closet full of expensive and beautiful things—it is instead about knowing when, where, and how to utilize what you have.
Nice light read, but with some fatal issues

The premise of this book, which is explained within the first few pages, is that there are ceratin "rules" about what to wear when, but that you can break those rules. So what's the point of the book then? The result is an overload of suggestions that go something like this: "What should you wear to a baby shower? You can wear anything you want! What should you wear to a graduation? You can wear anything you want!" I wanted a book that was much more direct in its inspiration and guidance. Sure, I understand that fashion rules are "meant to be broken" - but why not just say that as a kind of disclaimer at the beginning, and then actually teach those rules? That's the type of book I thought I was getting.
The illustrations are cute and nice, but I think out of place in this book. The outfit illustrations in each section were far more helpful than Ms. Garcia's blabbing about wearing whatever you want "as long as you have confidence!!!!!!!!!!" But, because they were... read more
Meatier Than Expected

This is a fun concept for a style book and I actually like that it is text-heavy, as Nina Garcia has such a nice writing voice. Outfit pictures rather than illustrations would certainly be appreciated, though they would also probably make the book date faster. When I saw that Nina Garcia was coming out with her fourth book in two years (I think?) I thought it would be pretty much filler, but I was pleasantly surprised. It does get a little repetitive, but it's a fun read with an inspiring can-do spirit.
My New Guilty Pleasure

Everybody eats an Oreo cookie differently. Nina Garcia's Look Book was my Oreo cookie. I simply couldn't devour it as a boring page-by-page turner. That would be a sin. I had to flip through the pictures upon first glance, then quickly grab a glass of wine and read all the "Rule Breakers We Love" blurbs back-to-back, giggling and relishing each one individually. THEN, to give you an idea of how slowly and thoroughly I enjoy my Oreo cookies, I took stickies and tag every page that I knew I would need to refer to on a regular basis for quick and insightful fashion and attitude pick-me-ups. My God, Nina even dedicated whole a chapter on what to wear when meeting your boyfriend's ex! She left no stone un-turned. In fact, last month after practicing from 6am to 7am for a huge company presentation, I finished my preparation with a quick read of the "Showtime Chic" chapter on "What to Wear to an Important Meeting or Presentation." The words strength, sophisticated, and confidence all from... read more
