I am an adult and I bought the book Sea of the Dead and read it before giving it to my grandchild. I could not put it down it was very good.
The sea of the dead is Carillon, the ocean bordering the Teshic Empire where 13-year-old Kehl is fifth son of the Warrior Prince Amatec. Kidnapped from the Teshic warrior academy by the Fallen, the very enemies who--he believes--murdered his mother, Kehl is taken to sea on the ship of the Fallen King, Temoc. The novel creates a detailed and fascinating fantasy world inspired by studies of pre-conquest Mexico and the Aztec Empire. Fascinating, too, are the changes in Kehl as he travels with Temoc and his crew. New experiences seem to contradict everything he's been taught, and people are not necessarily what they seem. Beneath an exciting tale of bonds and betrayals lie intense questions about a person's true character.
