Getting Started with Linux: Novell's Guide to CompTIA's Linux+ (Course 3060)

Customer Reviews:

TOO EXPENSIVE for a so called Linux book

By Donatello Adonis - October 17, 2009

I bought this book because my class Linux Essentials IST190 at Trident Technical College requires it. First of all, the book is very expensive, you can get the entire PDF file on Novell's website ( [...])for free instead of paying the overpriced tag of $[...] for it. The only difference between the book and the PDF file is that the PDF file does not have the chapter review questions and key terms. Moreover, this book covers only one flavor of Linux which is the SUSE 9.0, therefore, not enough information covered for the CompTIA's Linux+ exam. Nevertheless, the book is good for those who don't know anything about Linux and want to get the basics of the operating system. However, I wouldn't recommend this book for an intermediate or advance Linux user to use it as a source for the Linux+ exam or any other Linux certification. It has many TYPOS, it does not cover in depth how to use the command line interface, and after chapter 3, the author expects for you to be a Linux intermediate... read more

It's a textbook. Good luck.

This book is clearly meant to satisfy some course requirements that Novell has for its SuSe training, but as a book geared toward the Linux+ certification, it seems lacking.

Its organization sometimes presumes you've learned things it only mentions in later chapters. There's little distinction made between information that's required for Linux+ and that which isn't. The exercises are useful, however.

As a book geared toward a newcomer, however, it's rather daunting. If you need this book for a class, you've got no choice but to buy it. If you don't, and want to learn Linux on your own, you'd probably be better looking elsewhere.

Thompson's guide to SUSE 9.2, Training Manual

By Thomas C. Ellis "K4XV" - September 19, 2007

Good manual with quite a few typos. WEB site did not have corrections. You must use the distro that comes with the book or you will not get the desired results from the exercises. Even still the typos will leave you scratching your head in some cases. This is a Junior College class manual and I am pleased with it and the past Thompsom training guides that I have been exposed to. Price is a little steep.
