Thiw is an excellent review of child development research going beyond the original bokk by Cole and Cole. It should be in the curriculum of undergraduate students of psychology and related fields e.g. special education.
I bought this book to help me understand my baby. I'm not studying child development. I was a bit wary at forking out about 10 times as much as the average parenting book costs for a textbook, but am so glad I did.
Parenting books tell you what you should and shouldn't do and I find them too prescriptive. What I want to do is make decisions that are best for my family and baby, but to do this in an informed way - and this book is great for that. I was worried it might be too dry or heavy, but I actually found it far more readable than the average parenting book, it is beautifully written and filled with fascinating colour photos. It was wonderful, for example, to notice a picture of a baby blowing bubbles, because my baby had just started blowing bubbles like crazy - and then read and understand what that was all about. This book was bought for a grad school class, but it has a lot of interesting information for someone who is not only going to be a teacher, but planning on being a parent.
