Train Your Brain....Engage Your Heart....Transform Your Life: A Course in Attention & Interpretation Therapy (AIT)
Have you ever wondered if there is a way to integrate science and spirituality to nurture a healthier brain, and abiding peace and joy? Is there a universal language of happiness and suffering? How can we overcome the limitations of attention deficit, negative ruminations and fear? Are peace, joy, resilience, and altruism hardwired within us, and if so, why do they play hide and seek with us and are not so easily accessible? Scientists and mystics have been asking these questions for a very long time. In his book, Train Your Brain....Engage Your Heart....Transform Your Life, physician and integrative medicine expert Dr. Amit Sood answers these and many other questions. Dr. Sood synthesizes concepts from neurosciences, psychology, philosophy, and spirituality to offer a practical, hands-on approach to cultivate a healthier brain. By training our attention and refining interpretations, by nurturing gratitude, compassion, acceptance, forgiveness, and higher meaning and purpose, and by developing deeper relationships, better self care, meditation, and prayer, we can cultivate the level of objectivity required to successfully cope with daily obstacles like stress and illness. The skills train your brain's higher center to help you decrease the negative ruminations of the mind and enhance its engagement with the present moment and its contents. The skills also engage your heart to fill the present moment with greater joy. This book is not a one way dialog but offers an interactive experience using concepts and exercises many of which have been tested in research studies. The book offers a complete program toward enhancing present moment awareness and embodying greater gratitude, compassion, acceptance, forgiveness, and higher meaning and purpose-a state of Heartfulness.
Don't postpone joy
By Debbie L. Fuehrer "liederess" - February 7, 2011
After reading Dr. Sood's book and practicing the concepts, I felt as if a huge weight was lifted from my shoulders. I was no longer carrying past regrets and negative experiences or the burden of future fears. The AIT program taught me how to train my attention and refine my interpretations to focus on the present moment and turn from suffering to joy, from ego to self.
I learned how to stop spending an inordinate amount of my day thinking about what's wrong, what will go wrong, and what has gone wrong. I decreased my "attention black holes" by actively engaging the brain's higher center, the pre-frontal cortex by practicing skills that helped me discover the novelty that already exists in my world. I didn't need an outside event that was threatening or unusually pleasing to capture my attention. I could find the joy in ordinary events.
The five core teachable skills helped me refine my interpretations based on higher principles of gratitude, meaning and... read more

I went through the stuff with no bias, open mind and have tried to internalise and apply small yet practical tips from the book. Well, its amazing, lasting and blissful experience for over one year. I reread the book periodicaly, more so when I need answer to my day to day problems. It has never failed me so far. I fall short of words to put my feelings. How I wish I had been exposed to it in my earlier , formative years of life. I strongly recommend to gift it to near and dear ones so that the world becomes a better place to inhabitat.
Training your mind for emotional health
By Learner - January 8, 2012
Wow, this book is amazing. The author gives two simple steps to emotional well-being, along with tons of deeper explanation around the steps. I feel like the author has a lot of substance and wisdom to share, and he explains it well.
I like the author's science-based approach to the subject. The author's ideas and advice appear to be rooted in recent brain research. I'm leery of "touchy-feely" New-Age-type self-help books, so I was happy to see over 500 footnotes in this book from scientific journals. The author has an MD and is the director of integrative medicine at the Mayo Clinic, so he comes with credentials than inspire some confidence.
I have found a few typos, and the book will not win any book design awards. However, the content is so valuable that I do not care. I do like all the charts and diagrams that accompany the concepts in this book.
I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning to find peace and contentment. I found... read more
