Really good cook book for the gluten free chef; relies heavily on bean flour mix.

I've been gluten free for about 6 years. I have many gluten free cookbooks, but I was hooked on the promise of simplicity for the recipes in this book. I like the idea of quick, healthy meals for my family that also meet my dietary limitations. Tonight, I tried the mac and cheese and meatloaf. Both were delicious, and the family liked them as well! The recipes are fairly simple, and turned out very tasty. My only "complaint" - which I hope really isn't seen as a complaint but more of a fact - is that the 20 minutes part of the title means preparation time; it does not include cook time. But regardless, I look forward to trying more of the recipes.
As many other reviewers have mentioned, the tips are extremely helpful. There are tips for how to buy dried fruit, storing chickpeas in the fridge so homemade hummus will already be chilled, making double batches and freezing, etc. I love the idea of baking a big batch of brown rice or making extra quinoa and freezing for later... read more
Not really "Sugar-Free"
By S. Kesten "Stacy" - May 27, 2012
I purchased this book because I have completely cut all sugar and wheat out of my diet. I was so excited when I saw this book, because I thought, "Finally, someone has written a book which caters to both sugar free and gluten free eating!" Alas, many of the recipes in this book are chock full of sugars. Sure, they are disguised as Agave, Palm Sugar and Maple Syrup, but these are all just different forms of Sugar. Maybe these "unprocessed" forms of sugar are a tad better for your body than processed white table sugar, but if you are trying to watch your sugar intake due to candida, diabetes, unbalanced hormones, weight management, etc., then keep on looking, cause this isn't the book for you. And I've been reading reports lately that Agave might actually be worse than table sugar. Many types of Agave are highly processed and are really more like high fructose corn syrup (which is the worst). Having said that, there are some good recipes in the book and many of the entrees are sugar... read more
Excellent Book for Newbies to the Gluten Free Lifestyle!
By R. Haacke "bugbitesplayfood" - February 18, 2011
Hearing that I had a gluten intolerance 3 months ago was one of the hardest experiences. My doctor sent me out the door with little help other than to "dont eat wheat". I felt lost and HUNGRY! I found Simply Sugar and Gluten Free through some searches on the internet, and have been so grateful to Amy for her amazing blog, I knew I needed this book!
I was surprised how thick the book is, and have loved the recipes I have tried so far. The only thing I would change is to add pictures of these dishes - I am a very visual person, and love to see pics of the food. BUT this book makes up for that in great recipes and info on how to get started. Gluten Free cooking is daunting, and even downright terrifying at first, especially learning about the dozens of different flours that can be quite expensive! This book makes it easy to understand, and she includes a recipe for an All-Purpose GF flour mix that is used in many recipes. There is a great section in the back of the book on... read more
