I have an entire shelf of books on the brain (especially dealing with nutrition) and this is the best. It is one of the most comprehensive, easy to read and up-to-date books on brain nutrition out there. It is written by Patrick Holford, director of the Food for Brain Foundation and founder of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London, who has written or coauthored 22 other books on health.
Despite having read so much on the topic, I learned a lot. The book is filled with little-known facts. For example, when you eat trans fats, they can go directly to the brain and take the place of vital DHA (the essential fat which makes us smart) and mess up thinking processes. So junk food dumbs us down! So does pregnancy: It shrinks the brain (since so much of the DHA goes to the fetus). Women need to take mercury free (pharmaceutical grade) fish oil and eggs during and after pregnancy to prevent this. Very well written piece of work. Covers many aspects of Nutritional biochemistry and the mind. It presents references for primary scientific literature.I highly recommend it for psychologist, psychiatrist and health providers in general.
