Item response theory (IRT) is a latent variable modeling approach used to minimize bias and optimize the measurement power of educational and psychological tests and other psychometric applications.
Designed for researchers, psychometric professionals, and advanced students, this book clearly presents both the "how-to" and the "why" of IRT. It describes simple and more complex IRT models and shows how they are applied with the help of widely available software packages. Chapters follow a consistent format and build sequentially, taking the reader from model development through the fit analysis and interpretation phases that one would perform in practice. The use of common empirical data sets across the chapters facilitates understanding of the various models and how they relate to one another.I picked up several books on the subject and found this to be one of the better introductions to the title material: theory and methods for IRT. If you are doing any kind of testing or scale construction, IRT is a necessary tool in your kit and one that is increasingly viewed as superior to "Classical Test Theory". This book will give you all the basic theory needed to get started and, in combination with any of a number of R packages, begin scaling. This will change your understanding of the seemingly obvious task of measuring constructs.
An excellent book for both research and application.
The examples are very useful for understanding IRT models. The corresponding code written in Bilog or Multilog or Parscale and data sets can be downloaded from the author's homepage freely.
I ordered this book knowing very little about Item Response Theory (IRT). The author gives an excellent introduction with nice explanations of the concepts involved. There are some good comparisons with Classical Test Theory (CTT) which will help those more familiar with those concepts make the leap to IRT.
