Child Centered Approach to the New Baby

Our son is 30 months old and we are expecting his sibling in a few months. We've been picking up any baby books or big brother books we can find to help prepare him for the arrival of our second child.

The book is written from the big brother's perspective to his little sibling, (whose sex is unknown, also a plus as we don't know what our second baby's sex is going to be so it makes it a bit more versatile). It takes place sometime after the baby has already arrived and does not deal with the "waiting for" and "arrival" aspects of a new sibling. The book talks about how the big brother wants to play with his sibling, but that for now the baby just watches and smiles. It talks about how mom and dad let the big brother help by holding the baby gently, reading to the baby, pushing the baby in the stroller and helping wash the baby in the bath. positive but honest preparation

Our son turned 2 in April and baby brother was born in May. We have been reading this book over and over for several months now - he loves it! It prepares the older sibling for things being "a little different" after the baby is born, but also makes them feel like a big helper with the baby and reminds them that they will still have special time with mom and dad too. The only thing I wish it addressed was feeding the baby before solids (the older brother helps feed the baby pureed peas). So much time with a newborn is spent nursing/bottle feeding, and my son wasn't prepared for having to play independently and be patient during those times. I liked that there was no mention of giving up the crib, pacifier, etc. because those are for the baby now - this book focuses on the baby as a positive addition to the family, not a replacement of the older sibling.

Great book for the new big brother

My 2.5 yr old son has been less than thrilled about learning that I'm expecting another baby in a few months. He won't talk about the baby or acknowledge that he won't be the center of attention. So, I had to do something and read the reviews about this book and decided to try it. He LOVES this book. We just started reading it yesterday and it's a instant hit. He wants to read it over and over again. Now when I ask him if he's going to hold his little sister or help feed her (as the book says) he say, "YES!" so excitedly! I think this is a great book to help prepare a new big brother! It's written as if the baby is already arrived and from the brother's POV talking to his younger sibling -- GREAT!!
