The Rape of Innocence: female genital mutilation and circumcision in the USA

Customer Reviews:

It draws you in and enlightens your mind

By Beverly J. Cowling "songbird_63366" - May 31, 2010

Patricia writes in a conversational tone, recounting her memories as they come to her, making this book an easy and pleasant story to read about a very unpleasant but very real topic. This practice that has been largely ignored is brought to the forefront of your thoughts and gives you a strong desire to do something about this horrific act which is performed upon children to this day. The author gives one pause to consider the long term ramifications of something seemingly as simple as circumcision of infant boys. While it is clear that it is mutilation of little girls, we now must question that it is the same for boys. Patricia writes with clarity and subdued passion, great knowledge and strength of purpose.

Not a book JUST for mutilated females

By C. Whiting - October 22, 2010

Having been born in Kansas in the 1950s, I can say I was shocked to read this book. I had no idea female circumcision was performed in the U.S.A. period. This book opened my eyes to any and all mutilation done to babies. With courage and grace and from personal experience the author points out the repercussions of mutilation to babies, male and female, who have no say and must " go unconscious" to deal with the horror of circumcision- with a price to pay for the individual and society at a later date. This is a clear and eye opening message on some of the ways we have created such a messed up world and how sharing our knowledge, awareness, and caring- no matter how emotionally painful- can help to create a better world. Although a (sadly) needed book for circumcized females, this is also a book to ponder for anyone who has, unconsciously or not, indirectly or not, hurt anyone or been hurt by anyone.

Easy read, feels like a converstation between two close friends.

The thing that surprised me about Mrs. Robinetts book is it isn't just about female/male circumcision. It hits a much deeper level -- diving into the bonding and soulful connection that should occur between a mother and her child. It made me re-anaylize my own connection with my children. If you want to learn about the effects of circumcision and reinforce the importance of deep bonding with your children -- this is a must read
