TEENAGERS WITH ADD AND ADHD gives parents insight on everything from understanding the diagnosis to treatment options, and from behavioral and academic issues, to parent involvement and self-advocacy. The new edition includes additional or updated information in several areas. A separate chapter on medications provides details on specific drugs, including many new ones, and what research shows about their effectiveness in improving attention, impulse control, and distractibility. Dendy discusses new findings about the role of executive function problems and how they relate to teenagers difficulties with organizational skills, long-range planning, and staying on task. She advises parents on their role in working with schools to find strategies for academic success. Teenagers also speak out about their condition, and Dendy points to ways to involve them in their own treatment plan. In addition, the book covers coexisting disorders such as learning disabilities, depression, anxiety, Tourette syndrome, and Asperger syndrome.
Since 1995, this nuts and bolts guide has given parents hope and empowerment. It's chockfull of the latest data and proven strategies that can help manage the symptoms of ADD and ADHD at home and school.
My teenager was just diagnosed with ADD. This book is user friendly for parents and still a very valuable tool for teachers (I am a teacher also). It just explains so many "mysteries" that the AD/HD child presents: why can't they be on time, why do they battle you, why is everything around them messy, why, why, why......? AND, as another reviewer stated, I am validated as a mom. I am not the awful mom I thought I must be. Now I can keep digging our way through this and be pro-active to help my child. The book offers solid, realistic guidance. The book is also full of HOPE. With early intervention, these kids will shake out to be wonderful people, though the ride might be bumpy! Be sure to check out "A Bird's Eye View" by the same author.
As the mother of a teenager with ADD, this book was a real eye-opener. After years of seeing many behaviors in my adolescent/teenager that I thought seemed a bit odd, I read this book and realized that these behaviors added up to ADD. Did you know that a teenager with ADD often struggles with falling asleep and getting up in the morning? I'm not talking about the normal "night owl" thing - I'm talking about staying up until 4:30 AM on a school night - and not because s/he is doing homework!!! Heavenly days - no homework!! Did you know that a teenager with ADD can be very creative and think thru multiple details of something they are really interested in? - Have you ever tried to have your teenager dictate a research paper to you - and you do the typing? You can unleash their abilities in many different ways! I do agree that often times medication is necessary (it is with my teenager). This book will help parents understand the symptoms, common behaviors, along with helpful solutions... read more
