The style of the stories reminded me of Alice Munroe, only really dark and full of mild-to-severe confusion and misery. This writer really "gets it", she fully understands how we create our own worlds. The darkness of the stories is more than offset by the brilliance of the writing: Perdue can capture a minor character in a couple of sentences, like a Matisse drawing. Here's a taste: "He was an honest, hard-working kind of guy. The kind of guy whose favourite book as a boy had been The Last of the Mohicans and who is comforted daily by one belief: true heroes are not upwardly mobile." Buy this book if you like deft short-story portraits of interesting people in difficult situations.
This has nothing to do with nursing. It's a horrible book and is poorly written. It seems to be a collection of short stories, and I have no idea where they got the title from.
