    \ntensively. (See, e.g., Brown, 2000; Oxford, 1990; Rubin & Thompson, 1982;
\nShipman & Shipman, 1985; Stevick, 1976). This research focuses on En-
\nglish-speaking students learning a foreign language and on non-English
\nspeakers learning English. To date, there have been no published studies
\non the use of language learning strategies by heritage Spanish speakers
\nstudying Spanish. Research is needed on this unique and growing stu-
\ndent population so that educators can learn how to work more effec-
    \ntively with them.
\nThis digest describes some of the issues involved in the Spanish lan-
\nguage learning experiences of heritage Spanish speakers, the largest popu-
\nlation of heritage language speakers in the United States. It describes ways
\nin which educators can facilitate these students’ language development
\nthrough a better understanding of their language learning strategies and
\nsuggests areas in which further research is needed.

\northographic syllabic structure (BOSS), and the root morpheme. In Experiment 1, using a lexical-decision
\ntask, a typical inhibitory effect of the first-syllable frequency was found (while keeping constant the
\nBOSS frequency) as well as the word-frequency effect. Experiment 2 examined the role of both the
\nBOSS frequency and the word frequency, also in a lexical-decision task. Syllable frequency was
\ncontrolled. Both the BOSS frequency and the word frequency showed facilitatory effects. However, in
\nExperiments 3A and 3B, a facilitatory effect of the root frequency (when controlling for BOSS
\nfrequency) and a null effect of BOSS frequency (when controlling for root frequency) were found,
\nsuggesting that the BOSS effect is in fact reflecting a morpheme effect. A review of the current models
\nshows that it is difficult to integrate syllables and morphemes in a unique model.

\nphrases (NPs), in the modification of complex NPs. Experiment 1 demonstrated that NPs that
\nhad received relatively specific prior modification were less likely to take additional
\nmodification than NPs with less specific modification. This effect was obtained in both
    \nSpanish and English using 2 off-line tasks. Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrated on-line
\nmodifiability effects for both languages using a self-paced reading task. The results further
\nsuggest that although Spanish and English speakers may have opposing modification
\npreferences, modifiability constrained their interpretations in the same direction. The results of
\nExperiment 4 suggest that discrepancies between the off-line results from Experiment 1 and
\nthe on-line results from Experiment 3 may be due to task differences. Implications are
\ndiscussed in relation to current models of sentence processing.

We estimate error-correction models for exports and imports. Econometric analyses suggest that external demand and domestic activity are the more important determinants of net exports in the long run. However, where competitiveness is concerned, its impact on export growth in the short run appears to be higher than in the longer term. Moreover, during major downturns, the recovery of the Spanish economy has systematically been led by exports, which, in turn, has been associated with strong and rapid competitiveness gains, brought about by competitive devaluations. Since the exchange-rate instrument is not available anymore at national level, there is a case to assess the respective role of fiscal and structural policies in underpinning the recovery of the Spanish economy at the current juncture. The paper concludes that the room for manoeuvre for fiscal-policy stabilisation is currently very limited. In contrast, reducing the weight of distortionary taxes and/or increasing the weight of productive expenditures in a budget-neutral way would have positive impacts on potential growth. Boosting net-export growth crucially depends on the implementation of a comprehensive reform programme, within the framework of a broad social agreement, aiming at recovering competitiveness throughout enhancing competition, improving the functioning of labour and product markets, including the housing rental market, increasing physical, human and knowledge capital accumulation, promoting wage moderation and avoiding price-wage spirals. A pro-active role of the Spanish government in the social dialogue would provide guidance in the process and promote the agreement.\";s:5:\"thumb\";s:117:\"images/t/144/competitiveness-and-growth-in-emu-the-role-of-the-external-sector-in-the-adjustment-of-the-spanish-e.jpg\";s:6:\"thumb2\";s:118:\"images/t2/144/competitiveness-and-growth-in-emu-the-role-of-the-external-sector-in-the-adjustment-of-the-spanish-e.jpg\";s:9:\"permalink\";s:100:\"competitiveness-and-growth-in-emu-the-role-of-the-external-sector-in-the-adjustment-of-the-spanish-e\";s:5:\"pages\";s:2:\"44\";s:6:\"rating\";s:1:\"0\";s:5:\"voter\";s:1:\"0\";}i:9;O:8:\"stdClass\":13:{s:2:\"id\";s:5:\"14660\";s:6:\"status\";s:8:\"verified\";s:11:\"author_name\";s:7:\"samanta\";s:9:\"author_id\";s:4:\"1916\";s:14:\"author_website\";s:0:\"\";s:5:\"title\";s:57:\"A QUARTERLY MACROECONOMETRIC MODEL OF THE SPANISH ECONOMY\";s:11:\"description\";s:778:\"This paper presents a new version of the Spanish quarterly macroeconometric model. The previous version [see Willman and Estrada (2002)] evidenced a number of shortcomings, some of which are redressed here. In particular, the model now uses seasonally and working-days-adjusted time series; it considers a breakdown by sector (government and private sectors), by external trade (euro area and rest of the world) and by investment (residential and productive); and finally, it includes wealth evaluated at market prices. While the long-run properties of the old model have not changed substantially, in the short run different simulation exercises show that the new model provides stronger responses in the first two years and a prompter and faster return to the baseline values.\";s:5:\"thumb\";s:74:\"images/t/147/a-quarterly-macroeconometric-model-of-the-spanish-economy.jpg\";s:6:\"thumb2\";s:75:\"images/t2/147/a-quarterly-macroeconometric-model-of-the-spanish-economy.jpg\";s:9:\"permalink\";s:57:\"a-quarterly-macroeconometric-model-of-the-spanish-economy\";s:5:\"pages\";s:2:\"60\";s:6:\"rating\";s:1:\"0\";s:5:\"voter\";s:1:\"0\";}}', `cache_on` = '2015-02-28 00:22:55' WHERE `aff_id` = '502716'
