    \nJuticalpa in Honduras (n=10) and in Esquipulas and Muy-Muy in Nicaragua (n=13). The objective was to
    \nanalyze the milk market of small rural artisan cheese factories in livestock watersheds of Honduras and
    \nNicaragua to determine if:
    \n• there is a market for higher milk production
    \n• how much additional milk can the market absorb in each season of the year
    \n• there is a market for milk of higher hygienic quality.
    \nThe main buyer of the milk from small and medium scale farmers in Honduras and Nicaragua is the rural
    \nartisan cheese industry, which absorbs almost 80% of the milk produced in both countries. Total milk
    \nproduction during the rainy season is about twice that during the dry season, causing an over-supply and
    \nscarcity of milk, respectively. The shortage of fluid milk during the dry season leads to an unsatisfied market.
    \nThe artisan cheese factories in Honduras and Nicaragua would be willing to buy 76% and 55% more milk
    \nduring the dry season, but this supply is not available due low milk productivity. This fact suggests that an
    \naggressive program for the promotion of shrub legumes with sugarcane to supplement the herd during the
    \ndry season would have more impact that the promotion of grasses or legumes for the rainy season when
    \nthere is little market for additional milk produced. In addition, rural artisan cheese factories in Honduras and
    \nNicaragua, that consider the milk they collect is of bad quality, would be willing to pay a higher price if the
    \noption to collect milk of better hygienic quality exists. In Honduras this price would be about 9% higher during
    \nthe dry season and 11% higher during the rainy season. In Nicaragua the cheese factories would be willing
    \nto pay a milk price which is 17% higher, but only during the rainy season. As a result, large incentives exist in
    \nboth countries to increase milk production during the dry season and to improve the hygienic quality of milk in
    \nthe studied areas.

Of these factors, the most notable are: the high temperatures developed, the appropriate kiln length, the long period of time the fuel stays inside the kiln and the alkaline environment inside the kiln. There are a number of countries that use their own alternative fuels in cement plants. These fuels have different trade names and they differ in the amounts and the quality of the selected municipal and industrial waste fractions used. The fuels used should fall within the extreme values of parameters such as: minimum heating value, maximum humidity content, and maximum content of heavy and toxic metals. Cement plants in Poland also use alternative fuels. Within the Lafarge Group, the cement plants owned by Lafarge Poland Ltd. have initiated activities directed at promoting the wider use of alternative fuels. There are a number of wastes that can be incinerated as fuel in cement plants. Some that can be mentioned are: selected combustible fractions of municipal wastes, liquid crude-oil derived wastes, car tyres, waste products derived from paint and varnish production, expired medicines from the pharmaceutical industry and others.
