LANDSCAPE-ALLA PRIMA
Instructor Karl Heerdt was born in Western New York and has always called the area home.
He specializes in engaging and dynamic landscapes from around the country , compel ing still lifes , figurative paintings
and sculpture. Karl is an associate member of Oil Painters of America and his work can be found in private and corpo-
rate collections throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.
Karl is represented by Meibohm Fine Arts in East Aurora New York, the Oxford Gallery in Rochester New York, the
Cooley Gallery in Old Lyme CT, Planet Bronze Art Gal ery in Bo-
zeman MT, and Common Ground Art Gallery in Red Lodge MT.
In this class we will focus intensely on the fundamental essentials
that are needed to create a successful work of art, not just a painting.
Design, idea.... what are you trying to say? Compos-
tion.....presenting your idea in the simplest, yet most interesting way.
Value control....difficult to master, but an essential skil . Edges....a
most misunderstood and ignored element in painting. Col-
or....getting the "right" color you are envisioning or trying to match.
At times we will work as a group, other times on our own. Karl will
perform group demonstrations and individual mini demo‟s as needed.
I wil be encouraging everyone to complete their paintings in a single
sitting. I am not interested in a successful or failed painting, (you will
have both) I am interested in building your skil s in a timely fashion.
There is too much to learn in painting than to doddle about. You can
learn more in ten failed paintings ,than you could ever hope to in one
long drawn out, albeit successful painting.

MIXED MEDIA

Instructor - Todd Chalk has an impressive history of juried exhibitions
and awards and has had her work published in two watercolor books and
many catalogs.
Would you like to explore Mixed Media to find new and different ways to
express yourself? The class would include any media not using sol-
vents—dry or wet. Learn to explore your favorite subjects in mixed media
in any style that you prefer!

LANDSCAPE
Instructor Lucette Banas
is a life-long resident of Western New York,
with degrees in Art History and Art Education. She has spent her entire
adult life painting, teaching art, and exhibiting her work in New York,
Pennsylvania, Maine, and Massachusetts. Her passion is Landscape
Painting. " Art for me, is a compulsion. The conscious and subcon-
scious choices involved in the process of painting, are a never ending
source of excitement, and amazement for me."
Class wil begin by reviewing fundamental principles of landscape paint-
ing including: finding a reference, composition, perspective, and how to
begin. Attention will be given to techniques for achieving texture, form,
space, atmosphere, and color. The goal of the course is to develop
confidence as you discover individuality in painting.

WATERCOLOR WORKSHOPS
Instructor Ray Lockhart’s
love of painting started very early in life. As
a child living on Lake Michigan he came to love the sea, ships, light-
houses, and fishing villages along the eastern shore. Today these sub-
jects inspire many of his paintings. His career began 50 years ago in
commercial art as a designer, art director, and illustrator. Since retiring
he has pursued his first love—watercolor. Ray began teaching and con-
ducting watercolor workshops in 2002. Along the way he studied with
Tony Couch, Mel Stabin and Drew Struzan. Ray has been acknowl-
edged with numerous awards.
His workshops are designed for the aspiring watercolor artist, those
with some experience and those who are just getting started. Each
class begins with a painting demonstration. You may paint along with the artist, or pick a subject that appeals to you.
There will be additional demos on design, value studies, washes, painting skies, waterscapes, trees and shrubs, misting,
splattering, sponging, and class critique. www.raylockhartwatercolorworkshops.com

STILL LIFE WITH HONGNIAN ZHANG
HongNian Zhang is an international y known Chinese American artist who
works in the Western academic tradition. His paintings are in private, cor-
porate and museum collections in America, Europe and Asia.
Born in Nanjing, China, Zhang's artistic training began at age nine. At fourteen he
was the top student accepted to the Central Art Academy Affiliated High School in
Beijing. After graduation, the Cultural Revolution shut down the schools and Zhang
was sent to the remote countryside for four years of forced labor. Upon returning
he became the youngest artist employed by the Beijing Art Academy, and the
youngest ever elected to the All China Artists Association. As leader of the "Scar"
art period, an important artistic movement in China exposing the painful memories
of the Cultural Revolution, three of Zhang's paintings were acquired for the Chinese
National Art Gallery's permanent collection.
He moved to Woodstock, NY 1991 and taught for several years in the graduate
program of the New York Academy, and at the Woodstock School of Art. His
works have appeared in many publications, including National Geographic, Fine Art
Connoisseur, and Artist magazines. National Geographic Society acquired four of his Chinese historical paintings for their permanent
collection
Hongnian will teach two 3 Day STILL LIFE WORKSHOPS that wil emphasize the harmonious use of color and compos-
tion to effectively express your concept in painting.
ALLA PRIMA PORTRAIT WITH LOIS WOOLLEY
Lois Wool ey is an oil and pastel painter whose specialty is portraiture. Her portraits and figurative paintings are known
for their classic style, rich color and expressive mood. Her love for painting portraits stems from an abiding interest in
people: "People seem to me the ultimate subject matter - there is nothing so fascinating, beautiful and universally rele-
vant as an individual person.
She has been featured in Northlight Book's Pure Color: The Best of Pastel, The Pastel Jour-
nal, and Hudson Val ey Magazine. Honors include being a Fellow of the American Artists Pro-
fessional League, winning Best Portfolio 2004 at the Portrait Society of America, and being the
2005 recipient of the Woodstock Artist Museum's Yasuo Kuniyoshi award. In 2007, she won
the prestigious Joseph Giffuni Memorial Award at the Pastel Society of America's annual ex-
hibit.
Woolley's primary artistic training was in New York's Art Students League where she studied
drawing and anatomy with Robert Beverly Hale and painting with Robert Brackman. Always
searching to combine full color with strong form, her association with Zhang and his palette led
to her current style.
Her two day ALLA PRIMA PORTRAIT WORKSHOP will focus on helping you learn to start and
finish a portrait in one session.
