alien that nobody even considered it. The focus was instead on technique; what could you
do to ensure success? But as years went by, it became clear that some were succeeding on
making money online and some were not--even though both groups were doing many of
the same things!
What was the difference between those who succeeded and those who didn't? It wasn't a
disparity in skill or talent, or some secret techniques that the successful were keeping to
themselves. Making money online is an open book; you can learn the techniques easily
enough. Nobody has insider information that ensures that they succeed and you don't.
The difference between success and failure was, and is, entirely mental. Years of
experience have taught successful Internet business owners that the right mindset
makes all the difference. It's the single most significant variable.
Yet, even when these business owners success seemed to prove their theory, the Internet
business community remained skeptical. Could mindset really be that important?

This is a good illustration of making money online, everyone has basically the same tools
and techniques, but that's only a small part of what matters. Having the right mindset
can result in a few people dominating while the others struggle... even though they know

Sometimes you come across people who attend all the right seminars and events, they are
super intelligent, they have a big armory of products and services behind them, but for
some reason their mindset isn't quite right. The guys who are at the top of this industry,
the ones who are making millions or tens of millions of dollars, aren't necessarily the
smartest, they're not necessarily the hardest working, they've just got that mindset right.
You do need a basic understanding of the techniques, but beyond that it's really more
about the mindset than anything else.
The good news is that your thinking is entirely in your control. It's not always easy to
change your thought patterns, but it can be done. Here are a few suggestions to help you
get your head straight and achieve the right mindset for success.
-Awareness. Just knowing where you sabotage your own success is half the battle. The
mind is like a search engine; it categorizes and prioritizes the things we've told it really
matter. Observe yourself; how do you feel when you are on the verge of earning a lot of
money? If you're afraid of accepting it, or if you feel like you don't deserve it, that's a clue
that your head isn't in the right place.
-Avoid negative self-talk. Are you allowing negative self-talk to play like an endless
tape in your mind? Are you telling yourself you can't do this, or don't deserve to?
Wellness coach Elizabeth Scott says this about self-talk:
"When you tell yourself you can't handle something (or some other self-limiting
thought), you tend to stop looking for solutions. For example, notice the difference
between telling yourself you can't handle something and asking yourself how you will
handle something. Doesn't the second thought feel more hopeful and produce more
creativity? Negative self talk tends to be a self-fulfilling prophecy!"
-Reframe the negatives. Ms. Scott's quotation above gives a clue about how to handle
negative self-talk. Turn it into positive self-talk. Instead of saying you can't do something,
ask yourself how you will do it. Every negative can be turned into a positive. "Impossible"
can be "challenging," and a "failure" can become a "learning opportunity." It might feel
artificial at first, but this is the technique that ensures success more than any other.
Reframing your negative self-talk is the most effective way of getting your head straight.
-Visualize success. Dale Carnegie famously said, "Believe that you will succeed. Believe
it firmly, and you will then do what is necessary to bring success about." It's so easy to
imagine ourselves failing, and our imaginations are so powerful that imagining
something is almost guaranteed to make it come about. Instead, imagine yourself
succeeding, in whatever way you define success. Take a few moments to put those
pictures in your head every day before you start working.
Sports psychologists encourage athletes to see themselves winning long before the game
is played. The same goes for you. See yourself as a winner, believe yourself to be a winner,
and you will become a winner.
-Make a vision-board or goals list. What are you working for? Money is nice to have,
but it always means something else. It might mean security, freedom, time with your
family, experiences you've always wanted to have, or the luxury of being generous to
others. What do you want to achieve? Post those things in some sort of tangible form in a
place where you can see them every day. Put up a picture of the vacation you've always
promised the kids you'd take "someday." Make a list of goals and check them off as you
achieve them. You'll have proof of your success, and nothing inspires success like more
