A tool that has quickly become very popular
and rather useful for web hosts is called
cPanel. It allows them to distribute server
resources amongst a number of accounts and
users. This way, a single system can be
utilized by a number of individuals,
organizations and businesses without trouble.
It is rather easy to administrate. Adding
accounts, users, and linking them to the
hosted domains and file trees is a
straightforward and simple process.

In addition to what it does for the host, shared cPanel hosting services provide
a number of powerful and flexible tools to the hosting clients The cPanel tool
is organized as one very large screen, broken down into multiple categories,
these being Preferences, Mail, Files, Logs, Security, Domains, Databases,
Software/Services and Advanced Under each category are numerous buttons
leading to the various installed tools Included with cPanel is a large number of
preinstalled applications, but more can also be added by way of the included
plug-in system Under the Preferences category, you'll find resources
including help documentation, a video that guides you around the cPanel
interface, and a tool to change your user data, contact information, and
password You can also establish shortcuts here, and pick the language
you're most comfortable with
The appearance of the cPanel interface can also be changed here, by using a
number of installed "styles" The Mail category is intended for setting up and
maintaining e-mail accounts associated with the hosting Linux Hosting
Support for POP3 and IMAP are available Multiple e-mail boxes can be
created These boxes can be self-contained, or they can forward incoming mail
to a recipient
This is very useful if you'd like to disguise your e-mail address For
example, an account called could be set to forward all incoming mail to your
real e-mail address, such as The Files category is where you will go to
manage and initiate backups (manual or automatic), add, remove, or edit the
files on the server using the File Manager interface, set up and adjust settings
for FTP accounts, monitor current disk space utilization, and control individual
FTP sessions for security or monitoring purposes The Logs and Security
categories are both used to monitor and restrict access Security policies can
be set, viewed, and current and past activity can be viewed here
Old data is automatically archived here for perusal at a later date The
Domains tab is used to configure domain name redirection and nameserver
settings The Databases tab is used to create, modify, delete, and back up
SQL databases used by various applications on the server Software/Services
is used to install, uninstall, or adjust the settings of plug-in software for CPanel
The Advanced tab handles tasks like automated Cron jobs and FrontPage
extensions
These are just some of the available features provided by cPanel hosting
services The degree of flexibility provided has made it one of the most popular
options, and it is my personal favorite to use for this reason I do not feel
restricted, nor overwhelmed by the feature set available to me I would strongly
recommend its use for web hosts and clients alike
