All About Baby Cot Bedding
Bringing your baby home is one of the most
exciting times in any parent's life. Most
mums and dads spend months preparing the
nursery so that everything is perfect for the
arrival of the new-born. Baby cot bedding is
one of the most important aspects: as this is
where your new bundle of joy will spend
most of their hours in the early months.
Safety, convenience and appearance are all
What bedding is made from is the most vital
decision. There is a huge choice in fabrics
and designs, but it's all about what's best to
lie next to your infant's delicate skin. You
want natural, breathable and easy-to-wash
materials. Pure cotton is a wise choice,
provided it has 200 or more in thread count.
If it's blended with polyester or has a lower
thread count, it can degrade more quickly:
pill, bobble and get rough.
Good cottons, for example Egyptian
cotton sheets, just keep getting softer
with every wash and are almost silk-like
to the touch. Jersey knits, pure silk and
wools are also very popular and natural.
Just be careful, especially with flannel
sheets and blankets, that your little one
doesn't get too warm. Make sure you
have a thermostat and that your infant
isn't wearing too many layers.
Keeping baby safe is what every parent is
most concerned with. If you're worried
about sheets slipping, consider an
elasticated fitted sheet below and tuck in
the top sheet and blanket at the base of
the cot, so it can't ride up. Also think
about a well-secured cot bumper for
when your little one gets more mobile. It
will stop your child hurting themselves on
the sides of the crib.
There are also two-piece sheet systems
that can help. The sheet that lies over the
infant is zipped together with the bottom
sheet, which fits snuggly over the
mattress. This prevents any kind of
slipping of the top sheet. When you need
to change the top sheet, you just unzip it
and replace with a clean one.
You'll be doing a lot of washing of infant
bedding in this first couple of years. Make
sure you avoid the beautiful but
impractical items which require dry clean
only. Save these for a once-off occasion
like the naming ceremony or as a
christening blanket. Instead, opt for color
fast, quick drying bed ware that washes at
