It gathers inventories from SNMP enabled devices (such as computers, routers, switches, and printers) in a company’s network. A variety of data collection options ensure that Inventory Solution for Network Devices works in many environments. To help maximize your investment, Inventory Solution for Network Devices goes beyond simple data gathering. By providing a Web-based management console, policies to alert you of critical information, and professional quality Web Reports. Inventory Solution for Network Devices includes the tools you need to transform your network device inventory data into useful information. When the Network Device Inventory policy is run, Inventory Solution for Network Devices collects inventory data and generates easy-to-understand inventory reports. Inventory data can be collected from network devices on a repeating schedule by enabling the scheduler in a policy or can be collected as soon as possible for testing and troubleshooting by using the Discover Now button in the Network Device Discovery Settings page. The licensing model of Inventory Solution for Network Devices is one license per node. A node consists of a device on the network, such as a computer, printer, switch or router. Many switches and routers can be linked in parallel to appear as a single virtual device, Inventory Solution for Network Devices will detect and license the individual switches comprising the virtual switch accordingly. Note: If you think your license count is incorrect, check the “Chassis and Modules” report to see which switches may be contained within the device.Altiris Inventory Solution for Network Devices provides a default inventory policy that gathers inventory on all network devices at a scheduled time (in the evening hours). If you want to gather inventory from devices that which might not be present in the evening hours (such as notebook computers) or if you have devices in remote sites or in different time zones, you might want to break up the inventory gathering into multiple schedules and different collections of devices by making additional policies.Altiris Inventory Solution for Network Devices Product Guide6Chapter 2: Installing Inventory Solution for Network Devices on the Notification ServerInventory Solution for Network Devices must be installed and licensed on a computer running Notification Server. This product requires that the Notification Server must be on Windows 2000 or later. For detailed information on Notification Server, see the Altiris Notification Server Reference Guide and Altiris Notification Server Help.• Use Internet Explorer 6.0 or later for the browser. • Have the Network Discovery (included with Inventory Solution for Network Devices) installed on the Notification Server and have discovered the devices on the network. For information on network discovery, see the Altiris Network Discovery Product Guide. • Have Inventory Solution for Network Devices installed on the Notification Server.• Complete a network discovery. For information on network discovery, see the Altiris Network Discovery Product Guide.Collecting Network Device InventoryNetwork Discovery will populate the database with only a small amount of data—enough to identify the device. Inventory Solution for Network Devices goes beyond that initial data and gathers more information and in more detail based on the table mappings defined.Important: Before starting to work with Inventory Solution for Network Devices and mapping the MIBS and table definitions, do a “network discovery”. Information from the network discovery is required for Inventory Solution for Network Devices. For information about network discovery, see the Altiris Network Discovery Product Guide.Network devices can be inventoried automatically based on the schedule in the scan groups.
