Application of the Theory of Multiple Intelligences to Digital Systems Teaching
The passing on of knowledge is extremelyimportant for the evolution of a society. For centuries
teaching processes have undergone considerable
evolution to reach the current stage. Several pedagogical
theories have been studied, and new ones are being
proposed to allow this evolutionary process to continue.
The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, by Howard
Gardner, has been chosen as the theoretic guideline of
the work presented in this paper. According to
Gardner’s theory the human intellect can be divided into
areas of activity called intelligences which can develop to
a different degree. Thus it is highly desirable that
teaching techniques are used to stimulate the greatest
possible number of intelligences. This approach, when
applied to a specific discipline brings out some significant
challenges. In our specific case, Digital Systems heavily
focus on logic reasoning while stimulating intelligences
other than those integrally related to the discipline under
study turns out to be a challenging task. Therefore, to
advance a solution to the aforementioned challenge, this
work introduces three tools designed to help the teacher
create his or her lessons, along with guidelines on a
course on Digital Systems built using these tools to
exemplify how such tools can be used.
